He’s known her for years.
She’s known him for just as long
They walk home every day together
A boy and a girl
He lives down one road
She lives down another
They reach the fork that separates them
A boy and a girl
He gives her a hug goodnight
She hugs him back
They embrace as the sun sets between them
A boy and a girl
He wants to tell her the truth
She already has a “friend”
They tend to make the hugs last
A boy and a girl
He tries to keep the hug going
She gets a text from her “friend”
They abandon their moment at the fork
A boy and a girl
She heads for home
He watches her go
They say goodbye one more time.

He can’t see her on the road
A tear creeps down his face
